Flat and coastal areas, influenced by the Atlantic, with abundant rain and medium temperatures, in this case unlike other regions, never reaching extremes of heat and cold.

It was also the region that started the exploration of sparkling wines, perhaps when they didn’t have great influence internationally and nationally.

What also distinguishes it from other regions is the difference of terrains in the same area, which brings varied styles according to the different elements that prevail before others.

Its cool and humid climate favors the production of grapes of high acidity with low alcoholic value.

We see therefore due to the diverse and distinct factors described above, wines considered to have a more classic style and also new wines, distinguished by the multiple national and international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Here the white grape variety Fernão Pires predominates.

It is perhaps the zone with the most variety and at the same time the highest quality as far as national and international wine zones are concerned.

Situated in the southernmost part of continental Portugal, it is separated from the Alentejo area by a mountain range that stretches to the Spanish border.

Here we can refer to two styles of climate, Mediterranean climate with some variations.

The leeward side is a warmer region with a Mediterranean influence, situated east of the Faro coast, while the western side, the windward side is cooler, wetter and more temperate.

Very heterogeneous soils with the exception of the schistous area on the slopes of the mountains.

Divided into 4 sub-regions Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira.

Protected from the dry northern winds, only possible because of the vast mountainous area, and with plenty of sunshine throughout the region, an area with immense potential for growth, as seen for example in the California area.

White grape varieties identify Arinto and Síria, while in the reds the castelão and Negra mole grape varieties stand out.

Vast plains, with gentle, flat landscapes, occupy one third of mainland Portugal.

Divided into 8 sub-regions:

Borba, Évora, Granja-Amareleja, Moura, Portalegre, Redondo, Reguengos and Vidigueira, are then grouped into 3 distinct groups.

Portalegre offers mostly granite soils, influenced by the nearby Serra de São Mamede. Parcels of old vines, planted on steep slopes and therefore benefiting from a microclimate that gives these wines their complex variety and freshness. Bora, Évora and Reguengos are so to speak the soul of this Alentejo area, where everything is balanced, perhaps because it has no large-scale human influence, thus preserving the balance with nature. Granja-Amareleja, Moura and Vidigueira located a little further south, have as their predominant offer warmer and softer wines, and where the vineyards fight to proliferate and even subsist due to a little more adverse conditions.

Reference grape varieties are, in the case of white wines: Antão Vaz, Arinto and Roupeiro.

In the red varieties, Alfrocheiro, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez and Trincadeira stand out.

In the center of the region are Alenquer, Arruda, Lourinhã, Óbidos and Torres Vedras.

To the north we find Encostas d’Aire. Of all the regions we highlight Bucelas, Colares and Carcavelos. Bucelas has its own space in what concerns its white wines, dominated by the Arinto grape variety with great longevity and freshness.

Colares with its Ramisco variety vineyards, with plantations very close to the sea and characteristically sandy soils.

Carcavelos, due to its real estate growth and proximity to the capital, has practically no more vineyards or producers.

It is the most mountainous region of mainland Portugal.

Climate with continental influence and many and important temperature variations, with summers considered short, very hot and dry, and winters with a tendency to prolong and quite cold.

It is divided into three sub-regions: Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel and Cova da Beira, which despite being separated by mountain ranges share similar characteristics in what concerns the production and type of wine.

The most predominant white grape varieties are Arinto and Síria, among others.

In the reds, Bastardo, tinta roriz, and touriga nacional, among others, prevail.

In both cases, very old vineyards are relatively common in this region.

Located in the heart of Portugal.

It has a very rich heritage, namely Manueline monasteries and Roman ruins, to Gothic castles.

It is also famous for its vineyards and olive groves, cork oaks and Lusitanian horses.

It is one of the oldest wine producing areas in the country.

There are vineyards here that date back to Roman times, mainly in the coastal areas.

Terroirs are distinctive in this region, with its plains and riverbanks being an ideal terrain for growing these native Portuguese grapes.

Quality and balance are the dominant characteristics in the wine from this area, marked by its diversity of styles, tastes and budgets.

Tejo’s native grape varieties include Touriga nacional, as well as Trincadeira, Castelão, and Aragonese.

The Fernão Pires and Arinto grape varieties produce refreshing white wine.

It should be noted that this style of grape varieties are very complex and proliferate in specific environments as in the case of Tejo, maintaining natural acidity with balanced wines and fruity characteristics.

The old villages of this area, with unique and specific stories, however with a common goal, the production of high quality wines and as already mentioned with unique productions that this region provides.

With several collaborations between various producers, where traditions are still very much alive, such as treading the grapes by foot, harvesting by the communities and with a great sense of mutual help among them.

The cork also comes from this region, with the same cork that has existed in the region for many generations.

We then find 3 sub-regions:

Neighborhood

Sub region composed of highlands with hills and plains, located in the northern part of the Tagus River.

Charneca

Characterized by sandy soils, it forces the vines to have an extra resistance to subsist in these conditions, producing more complex fruit, adding higher temperatures where the grapes ripen faster.

Campo

Located on the left bank of the Tagus River, its proximity to the river offers a maritime climate, with balanced temperatures and fruity characteristics, acidity and freshness. The proximity to the river also allows the constant irrigation of the soils and thus giving sustenance to the vines.

The heritage and experience of wines in this era, combined with investment and experimentation and modern approaches, make the perfect combination to reduce costs, create new variants, and create wines that add more to an everyday, day-to-day experience.

Predominant grape varieties are Fernão Pires, Gouveio and Malvasia fina in the whites.

In the reds, the red grape varieties are tinta barroca, tinta roriz, touriga franca and touriga Nacional.

In the category of sparkling wines, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties are already a presence with almost 100 years of existence and decisive in the quality of sparkling wines, decisive for the proliferation and knowledge of this small region.

Characterized by being one of the wildest and harshest areas of the national territory, outlined by the schist soils characteristic of the region and by the grandiose Douro valley.

Despite being a wild and harsh area, it is notable the human intervention in this same region with the creation of terraces where vineyards were implemented over the years, with steep slopes.

A very particular climate, a mix between dryness during the summer and ample rain during the winter, creates a unique type of wine, considered almost the ambassador zone of wine.

In addition, it is a region recognized by Unesco as a “World Heritage Site”, given its inherent specificities and unique beauty.

It is also the birthplace of Port Wine, known and admired for decades, either by foreign or national investors.

This region is divided into 3 sub-regions:

Cima Corgo

It is the heart of the Douro and from here emerge several superior segments of Port Wine.

Lower Corgo

Influenced mainly by the Serra do Marão, it is the coolest sub-region, rainy and in turn more fertile and with a higher density of vines.

Upper Douro

It is the largest of the 3 regions and of hot, dry and extreme characteristics, but also less rugged.
