SUMMARY:Wine Dinner - Douro Maçanita Vinhos - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Located in the Douro region\, the Maçanita Vinhos are located in all its three sub-regions. Each of these sub-regions has its own characteristics. Depending on altitude and distance from the Douro River\, we can find schist as well as granite soils. Maçanita’s vines are found at different altitudes in different sub-regions. \nThe vines of Baixo Corgo are generally cooler\, as this sub-region is closer to the coast and has greater Atlantic influence. The Maçanita vines in Baixo Corgo are located between 550 and 700 metres above sea level on schist soils. The grape varieties planted are Viosinho\, Gouveio\, Malvasia Fina\, Arinto\, and Folgasão. These are vines that convey a lot of freshness and minerality given their location and altitude. \nThe Cima Corgo vineyards are more temperate\, situated in the heart of the Douro\, where the Atlantic influence is balanced. Because Portugal is a country with a long coastline\, the influences from the Atlantic and the continent are felt strongly throughout the Douro region\, causing temperatures to rise from the Baixo Corgo to the Douro Superior. In Cima Corgo\, the vineyards of Maçanita Vinhos are located at different altitudes and in different types of soil. \nThe Sousão and Touriga Nacional Cima Corgo vineyards are located at an altitude of 550 metres\, on yellow schist soils facing the Douro River\, with milder temperatures\, further aided by the altitude. This produces wines of great elegance and balance\, with fresh fruit notes and very soft tannins. \nAnother of Maçanita Vines is located at an altitude of 170 metres in blueschist soils. Here\, we have the vineyard from which we harvest the Touriga Nacional Letra A. \nLetra A is a classification that appeared after the creation of the House of Douro (an alliance between winegrowers in the Douro region) in the mid-20th Century. This classification was intended to classify and reward each farmer on the practices of the land and viticulture. Other aspects taken into account are the location of the vines on the Douro landscape\, altitude\, type of soil\, planting density\, microclimate\, etc. The vines that gathered the best of these parameters and that are said to be best performing for the production of Port wine grapes were awarded the classification Letra A. The vines that gathered the least advantageous conditions for producing Port wine were given the classification Letra F. \nAlso\, in Cima Corgo\, at an altitude of 550 metres\, in an area of transition from schist to granite\, the old Maçanita vines are grown (an ancient vine stock). Located in the less noble zone of the Douro classification\, the Letra F\, these are the vineyards that most impressed the Maçanita siblings. With a genetic and social history of around 150 years\, grapes are produced with a very specific character\, with non-interventionist viticulture\, without herbicides and according to the rules of integrated production. The recovery of these vineyards is one of the great aims of Maçanita Vinhos\, to give life to the ancient vines of the Douro Letra F. \nThe Douro Superior\, known for its warmer\, more mainland climate\, is the sub-region of the Douro closest to the Spanish border and therefore the sub-region with the least Atlantic influence. The vineyards of the wine “Quanto mais Arinto mais Gosto de Ti” can be found in the Murça area\, at an altitude of 540 metres\, on schist soils in the Douro Superior. A vineyard that despite being in the hottest sub-region of the Douro\, has deep soils\, with access to water\, at altitude\, this unique feature proves a later ripening of the grapes\, with lower sugar levels and consequently high acidity and freshness. \n \nOn July 10th let’s try to answer the question – What are “wines from Douro” ?  at Barrica by YoursPorto. \n19:00 – Welcome Drink at Alibi \n20:15 – Dinner at Barrica

SUMMARY:Wine Dinner Caves são João
DESCRIPTION:A story that goes through several generations. \nFounded in 1920 by the brothers José\, Manuel and Albano Costa\, the Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is today\, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia. \nIn the 30s with the prohibition of the elaboration of Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia\, the company starts to produce and commercialize Bairrada table wines. At the same time\, it started the production of natural sparkling wines following the “champagne” method. At this stage\, it is important to stress role played by the French aenologist Mr. Gaston Mainousson \nIt begins to export wines to the Brazilian market and\, shortly thereafter\, to the Portuguese colonies in Africa. By the end of the 50s\, is born one of the most famous wine brands in the region of Bairrada – the famous ³Frei João” – immediately followed by the well-known “Porta dos Cavaleiros” from the Dão region. \nBeing the first to use the designation of Reserva for its wines\, Caves S. João innovate in the wine market by using natural cork coated paper for its labels. \nIn the early 70s Caves São João acquire Quinta do Poço do Lobo\, a rustic property with about 37 hectares\, located in Pocariça\, Cantanhede. The Quinta was afterwards fully replanted with selected and strictly parceled grape arieties. \nWith the grapes harvested there\, the company started the production of the “Quinta do Poço do Lobo – Bairrada” wine\, a Bairrada Red with grapes from the Baga\, Moreto and Castelão varieties; the “Quinta do Poço do Lobo – Cabernet Sauvignon”\, a varietal wine with the most prestigious grape variety in the world; a white wine elaborated with the Arinto grape variety and the “Sparkling Quinta do Poço do Lobo”\, a sparkling wine with grapes from the Arinto and Chardonnay grape varieties. \nNowadays\, and after some investment in the area of vinification and quality control\, Caves São João are prepared to face future production challenges\, always following the evolution of the markets and the demands of increasingly exigent and conscientious consumers. \nOn February 8th let’s drink history in this special wine dinner at Barrica by YoursPorto. \n19:00 – Welcome Drink at Barrica \n20:15 – Dinner at Barrica

SUMMARY:Wine Dinner Quinta do Vale Meão - Sold out
DESCRIPTION:In 1877\, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira\, owner of the largest winemaking estate in the Douro\, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction from the Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality. Her dream was to create a model vineyard from nothing\, using for this the vast experience she had acquired throughout a lifetime as a Douro landowner. This ambitious project took eight years to complete\, from 1887 to 1895. Sadly\, this grand lady’s pleasure in her last and most significant enterprise was of short duration as she died in 1896. \nSince then\, the estate always remained in the hands of her descendants. In the 1970s\, her great-great-great-grandson\, Francisco Javier de Olazabal became responsible for its management and he began the long and laborious process of acquiring the shares that belonged to his kin and to other co-owners of the property. In 1994\, he and his children became the sole owners of the Quinta. Until then\, the grapes from the estate were sold to A.A. Ferreira S.A.\, the company established by Dona Antónia’s descendants\, where they formed the basis of some its finest wines. This connection continued until 1998 when Francisco Javier de Olazabal resigned as Managing Director of A.A. Ferreira S.A. to dedicate himself\, together with his oenologist son Francisco de Olazabal y Nicolau de Almeida\, to producing\, ageing and marketing the wines from the Quinta through a new company\, F. Olazabal & Filhos Lda. \nToday\, Francisco\, Luísa\, and Jaime are part of the company’s management\, each in their own role while sharing the same passion for wine. From one harvest to another\, they respect tradition and keep their minds open to innovation. The entire Olazabal family brings enthusiasm to the company and contributes to the perpetuity of D. Antónia’s project to make Vale Meão a model Estate in its own time. \n \nOn November 15th let’s drink history in this special wine dinner at Barrica by YoursPorto.
