Description
Founded in 1920 by the Costa brothers, José, Manuel, and Albano, Caves São João is a family-owned company that initially focused on trading fine wines from the Douro and liqueurs.
What is now the oldest active family-owned winery in the Anadia municipality underwent a transition in the 1930s. Due to the ban on producing Port wines outside of Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to trading table wines from Bairrada.
As a result, in the late 1950s, one of the most renowned wine brands in the Bairrada region was born: Frei João. Later on, the brand Porta dos Cavaleiros emerged in the demarcated Dão region.
